What Is Virtual Counselling?

Virtual counselling is counselling provided through a secure online video session rather than meeting in person.

The conversation is much like an in-person counselling appointment. We'll talk, explore what's going on, and work together toward the things that matter to you.

You don't need to be in crisis or have everything figured out before reaching out. Sometimes having a place to pause and talk things through can be helpful in itself.

Why Choose Virtual Counselling?

Virtual counselling can make accessing support easier when getting to an office isn't practical.

It may be a good fit if you:

  • Prefer the comfort and privacy of your own space

  • Have a busy work or family schedule

  • Live outside the Halifax Regional Municipality

  • Have difficulty travelling to appointments

  • Prefer the flexibility of online appointments

  • Want counselling without adding travel time to your day

For some people, being in a familiar environment can also make it easier to feel comfortable opening up.

What Can We Work On?

Virtual counselling can be helpful for many of the same concerns you might bring to an in-person appointment.

This may include:

  • Anxiety and stress

  • Feeling overwhelmed or burned out

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Communication and conflict

  • Parenting and family changes

  • Grief and loss

  • Major life transitions

  • Self-confidence and self-trust

  • Work-related stress

  • Men's mental health

  • Feeling stuck or uncertain about what's next

Virtual Couples Counselling

Couples don't need to be in the same room as a counsellor to begin working on their relationship.

Virtual couples counselling can provide a space to slow down difficult conversations, understand recurring patterns, and work toward better communication and connection.

Sessions may focus on communication, conflict, emotional safety, trust, intimacy, parenting, or other challenges affecting your relationship.

What Happens During an Online Session?

Before your appointment, you'll receive the information you need to connect to your session.

When we meet, we'll begin much like an in-person appointment. We'll talk about what's bringing you to counselling and what you'd like to get from the process.

There isn't a requirement to have a specific agenda for every session. We can adjust the focus as your needs change.

My approach is collaborative and non-judgmental. You're the expert on your own life, and we'll work together to figure out what feels useful.

A Private Space Is Important

For virtual counselling, it's important to have a space where you can speak privately and won't be interrupted.

You might choose a room at home, your office, or another private location.

Headphones can also be helpful if you want additional privacy.

If you're attending couples counselling from different locations, each person should have access to a private space and a reliable internet connection.

Who Can Access Virtual Counselling?

Virtual counselling is available to adults and couples throughout Nova Scotia.

You don't need to live in Bedford or Halifax to work with Steady Mind. Online counselling makes it possible to connect from communities across the province.

Virtual Counselling Rates

75-minute session: $255

Payment is due at the time of your appointment. A credit card is required unless other arrangements have been made in advance.

Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for counselling services. Coverage varies by individual plan, so we recommend confirming with your insurance provider that services provided by an RCT-C are eligible under your plan.
